Heroes, Interrupted

heroes-320-cold-snap-9

As I anticipate watching my DVR’d Heroes season finale, I reflect on what has been, for me,  a sub-par season. And here’s why.

After you watch enough television, you learn what kind of fan you are.  I like complicated.  I would prefer to be a little confused rather than feel like everything is being spelled out for me.  That’s why, even though I’m still not entirely sure what happened, I still love season two of Veronica Mars.

The first half of Heroes season three, the one with Alexander and Loeb, is complicated.  It moves in unpredictable, (mostly) interesting directions with almost every ep.  A few times it really loses the character thread, and even the narrative thread, but it never feels boring, predictable or oversimplified.

The second half, without them, has every important plot point repeated in every ep, sometimes more than once.  Very few surprises.

But it’s easy to follow.

(That having been said, mad shout out to Željko Ivanek, who is pwning this half.)

Matthew McConaughey vs. Hugh Jackman

OK, I grossly underestimated The Power of Beyonce and Obsessed made more in its opening weekend as I thought it would make in its entire run.

BATTLE FOR TERRA

WHAT’S THE PITCH?
The human race invades a peaceful planet because our planet done got blow’d up.

WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is good. Garnered some praise on the festival circuit.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
It’s got balls to open against Wolverine. And that’s about all it has going for it. $5mil.

GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST

WHAT’S THE PITCH?
A Christmas Carol, but with exes.

WILL IT SUCK?
Before you scoff that this is just another silly Matthew McConaughey romcom, remember this. This is coming from Mean Girls , Freaky Friday, The Spiderwick Chronicles helmer Mark Waters. It is however, also coming from the writers behind Rebound and Four Christmases. Okay. You can go back to scoffing.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
THIS is how you compete with Wolverine. $71mil.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE

WHAT’S THE PITCH?
Wolverine Begins

WILL IT SUCK?
What? You haven’t watched the leaked copy yet? Tsotsi bought enough good will for director Gavin Hood for me to overlook Rendition, and writer David Beniot has turned in some decent scripts (25th Hour, Kite Runner). And Gambit, motherfucker! Gambit!

On the other hand, I never really thought this was a good idea, and the trailers get me psyched only in spite of myself.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
The only thing that could possibly challenge this is Star Trek and that doesn’t come out until…oh, next week? Well, it’ll have this weekend! $235mil.

WHAT’S THE PITCH?
Isaach De Bankole does the Way of the Samurai thing.

WILL IT SUCK?
I don’t care if it looks like writer/director Jim Jarmusch is returning to Ghost Dog territory with this one, I want to go to there. Supporting cast includes Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, John Hurt, Gael Garcia Bernal and Hiam Abbas. And if you don’t recognize De Bankole by name, you’ll recognize his face.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
About as close as this gets to competition is next week when we get even more Garcia Bernal in Rudo y Cursi. $4mil.

Next Week: Boldy go where no origin story has gone before.

Why You Need to Watch Planet B-Boy Right Now

April 24, 2009 |  Filed under: Blog |  Comments (0)

Because it is awesome.  The end.

Seriously, though, even if you don’t love breakdancing (which I do) you could fast-forward through all the amazing moves (my God why would you, but still) and end up with a far shorter but no less moving portrait of a bunch of young men with dreams that somehow, against all odds, are supported by their traditionalist (and sometimes racist) kin.

And if you do like breakdancing, or hip hop, or dancing, or acrobatics, or kung fu, or gymkata, or any form of self-expression whatsoever, what are you waiting for?

If I had seen this before I picked my Best of 2008, this would have made it in.  High.

Better Than You’ll Ever Be, At Anything

It’s been six months and I’m still reeling from the announcement.  I dare say Tennant was better than Baker, and I freaking grew up on Baker.  Granted, Tennant got some help from Russell T. Davies’ show-running (who, by the way, is also stepping down, but being replaced by Steven Moffat, so I can’t exactly cry).

Portraying The Doctor, especially in Davies’ layered vision, required what can only be described as a weird fucking skill set, and Tennant somehow hit every note.

My feelings for his performance are summed up by this quote from Searching for Bobby Fischer:

He’s better at this than I’ve ever been at anything in my life. He’s better at this than you’ll ever be, at anything.

What Is Wrong With the Movie Industry Today

Keep in mind, this is one of the founders of Miramax speaking here:

“If I could make all my films from franchises, I would,” Dimension CEO Harvey Weinstein said recently at the Media and Money conference in New York.

I wanna say he’s being ironic.  He is, after all, speaking at a conference with the word Money in the title.  But he means it, right?

2nd Chance Theater

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas , which tumbled into obscurity last fall theatrically, is finding new life in the land of iTunes rentals, ranking third at the moment ahead of better-known titles like Zack and Miri (which is also making up for lost theatrical love on the Web) and right behind something called Twilight.

Far fewer surprises on the iTunes sales charts, with Day the Earth Stood Still probably gaining the most from the extra exposure down at number 10. Man, people really didn’t go see that movie.

It’s doing even better on DVD, though, hitting number two right behind Bedtime Stories in sales and number one on rentals. The other impressive DVD performer is Not Easily Broken, which faded quickly in theaters but, like most of it’s Christian-themed kin is finding robust life on home video.

OBSESSED

Obsessed_18.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
Interracial Fatal Attraction

WILL IT SUCK?
Well, the director’s done some decent television including Dexter and The Wire. The writer, however, has given us Lakeview Terrace and Money Train, so I’m pretty sure Beyonce getting in Ali Larter’s face for macking on her man will be about as bad as this trailer makes it out to be.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Well, if pandering to the stereotype of black women hate, hate, hating white women who go after their men is a viable marketing ploy, I still don’t think this will work. $24mil.

EARTH

Earth_31.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
Nature doc in which we follow three families of different cute adorable…Holy crap! Did you just see that shark eat that fish in midair!?

WILL IT SUCK?
Essentially a re-cut of the BBC series Planet Earth with a new narrator (James Earl Jones instead of Patrick Stewart). Early buzz is good.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
This is the first release from the new Disneyearth label, so you know they’ll promote the hell out of it. It opens on Earth Day and Disney will plant a tree for every ticket sold during the first week so I have to ask, if you don’t see it, why do you hate our planet? $8mil.

FIGHTING

Fighting_2.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
The Underground Street Fighting Kid

WILL IT SUCK?
From A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints writer/director Dito Montiel, so probably a step up from Never Back Down. Terence Howard and Luis Guzman in the supporting cast, but the casting that really has me stoked is Roger Guenveur Smith, whom you may remember as Smiley from Do the Right Thing, but looks to make a nice turn as a villain here.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Do you remember A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints? Do you even remember Never Back Down? $25mil.

THE SOLOIST

(Delayed from November ‘08)

The_Soloist_2.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
Reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) discovers musical genius (Jamie Foxx) living on the street. Based on the true story of Nathaniel Anthony Ayers.

WILL IT SUCK?
A lot of cylinders firing here. The storytelling skill of director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice). The acting chops of the leads, plus support from Catherine Keener and Stephen Root. An adaptation of the book by Steve Lopez (played by Downey) by Susannah Grant (Erin Brokovich, Ever After). The only thing kind of underwhelming so far is the trailer.

Early buzz is mixed.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
If you think your film is an Oscar contender but can’t afford to promote it right away, don’t move it to the last weekend before summer blockbusters obliterate everything in their sight. $24mil.

Limited

TYSON

Tyson_1.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
Doc about Mike Tyson

WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is sick. Considered by IMDB to be writer/director James Toback’s best work. Won the (specially created) Regard Knockout Award at Cannes.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
Its biggest competition is the probability that the art house crowd isn’t interested in Mike Tyson. $5mil.

MUTANT CHRONICLES

Mutant_Chronicles_1.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
Okay, so you’ve got mutants and it’s the future and there are four corporations battling each other and Ron Perlman’s gonna save the world somehow.

WILL IT SUCK?
You know those really crappy Sci-Fi (I’m sorry, SyFy) Channel movies that make you amazed that the same network showed Battlestar Galactica? This is getting the buzz of those movies. Only difference is it has, like, John Malkovich in it instead of Stephen Baldwin. Still, not supposed to be a good time.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
I’m guessing the VOD release (which happened a month earlier) will fare better. $1mil.

TREELESS MOUNTAIN

I_Treeless_2.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
Two children in Seoul must fend for themselves when their mother leaves to find their dad.

WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is great. Won some international kudos at festivals, including Berlin. The performances of the children are supposed to be amazing.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
This is the kind of movie where lightning has to strike for word of mouth to translate into serious indie box office. $750,000.

THE INFORMERS

The_Informers_4.jpgWHAT’S THE PITCH?
Adaptation of a Brett Easton Ellis novel in which rich people behave themselves. Just kidding. More hedonistic bastards in L.A. in the 80’s.

WILL IT SUCK?
Early buzz is mixed and, depending upon whom you believe, that has to do with the director getting replaced midstream. Here’s the story (be sure to read the rebuttal from the studio at the end). That having been said, the director has some good experience with satire (Buffalo Soldiers) and Ellis himself contributed to the screenplay (although the screenplay was reportedly gutted – again, read the story). Interesting cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Mickey Rourke and Brad Renfro in what must have been one of his last roles.

HOW WELL WILL IT DO?
A high profile cast, but not a high profile distributor. $2mil.

Next Week: That movie you could have watched, like, a month ago, finally comes out legally.
