Crunching Box Office Data for Fun

I have a friend who likes to crunch data for fun. Really.

Anyway, he got a hold of the IMDb’s list of top-grossing (in the U.S.) films of all time and went to town. I had tweeted about how this summer produced two films that made their way into the all-time top ten—Avengers and Dark Knight Rises—with Avengers even making it into the top three and how that was pretty remarkable. But what his data crunching revealed—explored in the charts he created below—is that some things have changed more than others. To wit (you can click on these to enlarge)…

This chart shows that the while the maximum gross for a film on this list has gone up wildly over the past thirty or so years, the average gross in the same time span has stayed pretty much the same, around $170 million.

More movies are making this list every year which, in turn, leads us to our next chart…

…the annual total of these films has gone up considerably since the late 80′s.
