On an Unfortunate Turn of Events in This Season of Doctor Who

April 30, 2008 |  Filed under: Blog |

SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read this if you haven’t watched first episode of Season Four proper of Doctor Who (so, you know, not the Titanic one but the one after that - although you should see the Titanic one first, too).

Here is a list of companions I would rather have The Doctor take on than Donna.

1. Mickey. Yes, Mickey.

2. That little burble of stardust Kylie Minogue turned into in Voyage of the Damned.

3. Donna’s kooky grandfather.

4. Nikki and Paolo from Lost.

5. A stapler.

6. A Dalek.

7. Two Daleks.

8. Rob Schneider.

9. Parker from Buffy.

10. Richard Hatch.

I am apparently in the minority here, but I like Donna. She’s like a Tegan for the 21st century, but more fun. When she gets good writing, Catherine Tate is HI-larious. Stay tuned.

  2. Dr. Wife Says:

She really needs to turn the shrill shrew factor down by about a factor of 10.

  3. David Says:

    Brad,

I can only hope you’re right, because I actually liked Tegan a lot. Maybe it will be like what happened in season two of Torchwood where they decided to actually start writing for Ianto (not that I disliked Ianto, but I LOVED him in season two).

  4. M-D Says:

I’m not a huge Catherine Tate fan, and personally I’m glad to see Freema back for a while. That said, the Donna character is about 70% less annoying than she was in “The Runaway Bride”, and in the 2nd and 3rd episodes of this series, I thought she was used (quite effectively) as The Doctor’s conscience. We’ll see what happens as more companions are added into the mix.

While I’m at it… Mickey the idiot makes the list, but not poor ol’ K-9?

  5. David Says:

No, see, I liked K-9. These are people that are just slightly more tolerable. Although I’m beginning to reconsider Richard Hatch. That would suck.

  6. Chris Says:

Ha, my first impression of Donna as a companion is similar to David’s. Aigh! Even so, the point about writing for the character (cf. Ianto) is well-taken. Give them time. But man, I think I’ll miss Freema for a long time.

    Was Mickey *that* bad?

  7. M-D Says:

Wait - which Richard Hatch are we talking about? The one from BSG, or the fat nude git from Survivor?

  8. David Says:

fat nude git. Anybody from BSG would rock.
