Way to Screw the Coen Bros, Guys!

The National Board of Review, now entering their 98th year of yelling “First!” in the comments section that is Awards Season, has chosen No Country for Old Men as its film of the year, all but guaranteeing it will not win Best Picture. They’re a little more hit or miss with director, which is good news for Tim Burton, who might now at least get his first Best Director nod.
They’re much more consistent about Actor, which is surprising news for George Clooney, who I figured was in the ballpark (especially with the cred of a Supporting Actor Oscar on the shelf) but was no lock. They predict Actress nods fairly well, which means that Julie Christie’s amazing performance in the summer indie release Away From Her is a little less likely to be forgotten.
Glad to see Gone, Baby, Gone get some love, though how much difference it will make is uncertain. We’ll know if it has traction once the Golden Globe nods are announced next week.
And I’m starting to wish I had seen Lars and the Real Girl when I had the chance.
Assassination also got more love than expected, but I’m not sorry I missed that one. Much.
